2009-01-13BRIEF REPORT of Council Meeting, held on Jan.13, 2009
1. Opening: Chairman Jack VanGilst welcomes all the members, reads Ps.146 and a
meditation, asks us to sing O Master Let Walk with Thee, and ledas in prayer.
Absent are: H. Douma & J. Men khorst;
2. Minutes of the Dec. 2, 2008 meeting are approved;Council deals with a few items of the minutes, and approves the application for a summer intern;
3. Council approves the transfer of membership by profession of Stephanie Proper (DeJong) to the First CRC of Kemptville;
4. The clerk has distributed all items of correspondence;
5. Several committees have not met as yet in the new year, hence there is little to report;
6. Harold DeJong reports for the Youth Minstry of our church. He mentions that several people have registered for the Jan. 17 Youth Ministry Strategy Day, also that approx. 12 young persons have signed up for the Mission Trip in March.
7. Coiuncil approves that the pastor go along on that Mission Trip and will have the 2 Sundays off (March 15 & 22);
8. The pastor gives his Dec. report and singles out a few items;
9. Council approves that the pastor attend the wedding of Kimberly DeJong in California, that he will be gone from Wed. Jan. 22 till Sat. Jan. 27, and that he take half a week as his holidays allotment for this event; the pastor will present the wedding bible to the couple, on behalf of council and congregation;
10. Sabbatical Leave: the pastor will be on an unpaid Sabbatical Leave from the beginning of June till the beginning of Sept. Dates are somewhat flexible at this point.
11. The deacons report that the luncheon fo the seniors in Dec. was a success and that this was the largest group so far; the Offerings Schedule for 2009 is almost ready for approval by council;
12. The clerk has received a set of 4 pieces of silverware consisting of a coffee and teapot as well as a cream and sugar set. Coiuncil discusses this donation for a while, and will see later what we can do with it; the clerk will send a letter of thanks to the donors;
13. Council spends a brief time discussing the second service. Council looks at format, importance, causes of decline, time of worship, etc. Will be discussed again, also in consultation with the congregation;
14. Council approves James Kooistra’s application to Classis for renewal of his Licence to Exhort;
15. The chairman mentions the upcoming classis meeting in March, to be held in Ottawa Calvin CRC, and asks the elders to consider attending as delegate;
16. At 10 p.m. the chaiman asks us to sing “Faith of our Fathers” and he closes the meeting with prayer.
