2009-03-24Brief Report of the Council Meeting held on March 24, 2009
1. Opening (7:30): Vice-Chairman Ype Vanderveen welcomed those present, read 2 Peter
2, asked us to sing “Rock of Ages….”, and led in prayer;
Absent were: H. Douma, J. VanGilst, R. Johnston;
2. Minutes of Feb. 10, 2009 were approved as presented;
3. Matters arising from the Minutes:
a. Gift of Silver Set (Tea/Coffee) of 4 pieces: council decided to find a place
where it can be displayed;
b. Evolution/Creation: council spent some time discussing these matters because
of an article in the Feb./09 BANNER;
4. Youth Strategy Report: council was informed about this report by Harold DeJong, who
introduced it and answered questions. It will be dealt with again at the next Council
Meeting;
5. The clerk will order extra copies of the magazine “FORUM” from Calvin Theological
Seminary so interested members of the congregation can read it too;
6. Evangelism Com.: Jack Menkhorst reported that this com. has some new members and
is planning a number of events, i.e. VBS and also a workshop on “Budgeting”;
7. Worship Com.: Grant Cousins reported for this com. It has a new member, Reuben
VanGilst, and the com. looked at several special services in April: Easter, annual
Prayer Day Service (Sunday Eve. April 26), Lord Supper on Good Friday;
8. The pastor gave his report covering his activities in Feb. and also plans for April, etc.
Council approved the baptism of Samuel William Schuler, it heard a report on the
Mission Trip, approved the holidays plans of the pastor (April 13-20) and the
pastor’s plans to take a ‘Refresher’ course at Trinity College in Toronto (May-12-15);
9. Council approved the proposed Offerings Schedule for 2009;
10.The clerk reported on the several things he did for the church during Feb./March;
11.Summer Student: Grant Cousins reported that we will have a summer student, and
more details will follow later;
12.Censura Morum: Ype introduced it and council will exercise it at its next meeting;
13.Council approved increases for visiting pastors ($ 100.00 per service) and mileage
will be $ .45 per km.;
14.Closing: (10:05) we sang “I Sought the Lord….” and Ype closed with prayer;
